Within all of us, there lives a version we pretend doesn’t exist.

I’ve snapped at people I care about. I’ve ghosted opportunities I said I wanted. I’ve shut down in moments, I thought I’d step up.

In hindsight, I think to myself: “But that doesn’t seem like me.”

But it was.

Carl Jung once said, “In each of us there is another whom we do not know.” We all have a part of ourselves we don’t know or don’t want to see.

We act like we’re in control; calm, polished, brave, put-together. But then something external happens, and out comes the side of us we’d rather not talk about.

Jung called it the “shadow.” It’s the side of you that doesn’t match the image you show others.

But your shadow isn’t anger or insecurities. Sometimes, it’s creativity. Boldness. Honesty.

When you hide it, it doesn’t stay quiet. It leaks out in small ways.

You shut down. You lash out.

The longer you ignore it, the louder it gets.

You don’t need a therapist to find your shadow self. A breakup will do it. Burnout will do it. So will failing in front of people, or winning too fast.

These things shake the mask off. And when it slips, you see who else has been there all along.

But feeling uncomfortable is a great way to connect with parts of the shadow self.

So what do you do?

Slow down, and stop trying to be one thing - because you're not.

The multiple selves theory tells us your identity is made up of hundreds of selves, all with their own goals and personalities.

They write things you’d never say. They can be vulnerable. They speak their own truths.
